Crete, German parachute troops in action. On Crete, the German bombing of the Herkalion Aerodrome, near Candia, was followed by Ground Strafing by Messerschmitts. While these fighters patrolled the bombed area, troop-carrying aircraft followed in, escorted by bombers. Parachute troops, of whom 60/70 per cent were destroyed before reaching ground were then dropped. German parachute troops descending. This picture shows clearly the usual formation of three.
