The old sport of tilting at the quintain, one popular throughout medieval England

The old sport of tilting at the quintain, one popular throughout medieval England, was revived at Offham, Maidstone, when the only quitain in the country was restored to the village green. It has been kept in safety from air raids all through the war. The Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Lord Corrnwallis, " reinstated" the quintain and took the first tilt at the quintain. Here Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Lord Cornwellis, takes the first try. It isns so easy as it looks; the sand bag has a tricky habit of swinging back and hitting the tilter on the head. 11th August 1945

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to medieval England as the old sport of tilting at the quintain is revived in Offham, Maidstone. The village green comes alive with excitement and anticipation as the only quintain in the country is restored after being kept safe from air raids throughout the war. The Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Lord Cornwallis, takes center stage as he "reinstates" the quintain and bravely steps up to take the first tilt. But this seemingly simple task proves to be more challenging than expected. As Lord Cornwallis aims his lance towards the swinging sandbag attached to the quintain, it becomes evident that precision and skill are required. The sandbag has a mischievous habit of swinging back unexpectedly, posing a threat to any tilter's head. Surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd adorned with vibrant bunting, this moment captures not only a traditional sporting event but also showcases customs and traditions deeply rooted in history. Horses stand proudly nearby, ready for their turn in this thrilling jousting spectacle. This evocative image from August 11th, 1945 transports us back to a time when such spectacles were cherished forms of entertainment. It serves as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage and invites us to appreciate both ancient traditions and those who work tirelessly to preserve them for future generations.
