A RAF search and rescue Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer

A RAF search and rescue Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer, which made a mercy dash to get emergency patients to hospital, had to stop twice because of blizzards.
The four man crew battled through the Arctic conditions to get from Berwick Infirmary to Newcastles Royal Victoria Infirmary and General Hospital for urgent treatment.
Poor weather conditions on the A1 North of Alnwick made it impossible for ambulances to get through.
The patients, who were not named, were a boy with a serious leg fracture, an expectant mother with complications, a man with a heart problem and a woman with serious abdominal problems.
