Huddersfield Junior Library was under siege when some 50 Red Indians turned up

Huddersfield Junior Library was under siege when some 50 Red Indians turned up! But there was no panic - they were only youngsters taking part in the librarys Indians Day. It was just one of the activities taking place for the summer holidays. Said senior library assistant Rowena Gregory: " We have been using various themes for the holiday activities. The kids were shown how to make masks, totem poles and got the chance to be Indians for the day." Hard at work - Rebecca Farrell, Alison Bruton, Claire Bruton and Victoria Farrell busy colouring. 2nd August 1988

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1988, Huddersfield Junior Library becomes the epicenter of excitement as it is "under siege" by a group of around 50 Red Indians. However, there is no need for panic as these "Red Indians" are actually enthusiastic youngsters participating in the library's Indians Day event. The library staff had organized various activities to keep children engaged during their summer holidays. Senior library assistant Rowena Gregory explains that they have been using different themes for holiday activities, and on this particular day, the kids were taught how to make masks and totem poles while immersing themselves in the role of Native Americans. The atmosphere was filled with creativity and imagination as children transformed into brave warriors and wise chiefs. The photograph captures four young girls diligently coloring away at a table - Rebecca Farrell, Alison Bruton, Claire Bruton, and Victoria Farrell. Their focused expressions reveal their dedication towards creating vibrant masterpieces. This nostalgic image takes us back to a time when libraries served not only as repositories of knowledge but also as hubs for fun-filled educational experiences. It reminds us of the importance of fostering creativity and curiosity among young minds through engaging activities like crafts and storytelling. As we delve into this snapshot from the past, we can't help but appreciate how libraries continue to play an essential role in shaping our future generations' love for learning.
