EDITORS COMMENTS
In this haunting print from the 1986 World Rally Championship, we are transported back to a tragic moment that forever changed the motorsport world. The image captures Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto during a service break at the Tour de Corse in Ajaccio, Corsica. Little did they know that their lives would soon be cut short. Toivonen, an immensely talented Finnish driver, was piloting the powerful Lancia Delta S4 with Cresto as his co-driver. This rally event marked the fifth round of the championship and held great promise for both men. However, fate had other plans. Just days after this portrait was taken on May 1st-3rd, disaster struck during a stage of the race. Toivonen's car veered off course and tragically burst into flames upon impact. Both he and Cresto lost their lives in what remains one of rallying's darkest moments. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the risks involved in motorsport and pays tribute to two individuals who dedicated their lives to pushing boundaries on treacherous roads around the world. It stands as a somber testament to their passion for speed and adventure while serving as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change within seconds on any given track or road.
