EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Forth Bridge, immortalized in a stunning LNER poster from 1928. The London & North Eastern Railway commissioned this artwork to entice travelers to explore the scenic wonders of Scotland by rail. The Forth Bridge is an engineering marvel that spans the estuary of the River Forth, connecting the East Coast route between London and Aberdeen. Designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker, it stands as a testament to their ingenuity and was inaugurated with great pomp by the Prince of Wales in 1890. Renowned artist Henry George Gawthorn skillfully captured this architectural masterpiece in his poster design. Gawthorn's background as an architect shines through in his meticulous attention to detail, bringing out every majestic curve and intricate structure of the bridge. Gawthorn's artistic prowess extended beyond posters; he authored books on design and publicity while producing numerous artworks for LNER. A fascinating aspect of his work is his inclusion of a self-portrait within many pieces, complete with distinctive pince-nez glasses and a stylish panama hat. This National Railway Museum print allows us to appreciate not only Gawthorn's talent but also serves as a reminder of how railway travel has connected people across vast distances throughout history. It invites us to embark on our own journey through time, imagining ourselves traversing this magnificent bridge while experiencing Scotland's breathtaking landscapes along its storied rails.
