An American bison stands in the grasslands of the Janos Biosphere Reserve in Janos
An American bison stands in the grasslands of the Janos Biosphere Reserve in Janos, in Chihuahua state, May 16, 2014. The bison is one of 300 endangered species in Mexico and fundamental for the recovery of the Chihuahan Desert grasslands according to the director of the El Uno Ecological Reserve. Bison are an essential part of the ecosystem in supporting populations of other species in the reserve. Bison break the ground with their step and allow plants to grow, promote water filtration and keep the grass at a height perfect for other species like the prairie dog to thrive. As part of the five-year old Bison Reintroduction Project by The Nature Conservancy, NGOs, universities and government agencies, eight more adult bison, five females and three males, just arrived from New Mexico and were released in Janos, totalling now 61 bison in the reserve. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the majestic presence of an American bison standing tall amidst the vast grasslands of the Janos Biosphere Reserve in Janos, Chihuahua state. Dated May 16,2014, this image captures a crucial moment for both conservationists and nature enthusiasts alike. Highlighted as one of Mexico's 300 endangered species, this solitary bison holds immense significance for the recovery and preservation of the Chihuahan Desert grasslands. As explained by the director of El Uno Ecological Reserve, these magnificent creatures play a fundamental role in maintaining balance within their ecosystem. The impact of bison on their surroundings is truly remarkable. With each powerful step they take upon the earth's surface, they break ground and create space for new plant growth. Additionally, their presence promotes water filtration and ensures that grass remains at an optimal height for other species to thrive – such as prairie dogs. This particular photograph marks a milestone in The Nature Conservancy's Bison Reintroduction Project – a collaborative effort involving NGOs, universities, and government agencies. On this day alone, eight adult bison (five females and three males) were successfully released into Janos after being transported from New Mexico. This brings the total number of bison residing within the reserve to an impressive count of 61. Through images like these captured by Jose Luis Gonzalez from Reuters Images agency, we are reminded not only of nature's awe-inspiring beauty but also our responsibility to protect endangered species like these American bison who hold vital roles within delicate ecosystems worldwide.
