The woman is wearing a necklace and earrings with her hair pulled up and covered with a headdress. Single female heads, normally wearing headdresses and jewellery, were a popular motif in the red-figure ware of Southern Italy. Pottery such as this was possibly used for funerary purposes, rather than daily use. This amphora was collected from Pompeii, Italy. Bequest from Miss Mary Sophie Tucker.
