Framed Photos from Royal Cornwall Museum
Girl Leaning on a Ledge, Artist Unknown
Oil on canvas. This painting, catalogued as being by an unknown artist, appears to be an exact copy of part of Two Women at a Window, painted around 1655 by Spanish artist Bartolome EstebanMurillo (1617-1682). Murillo was the leading painter in Seville in the later 17th century. He remained one of the most admired and popular of all European artists in the 18th and early 19th centuries. In the 1670s, Murillo found patrons in Cadiz, which was rising in importance as a centre of commerce and trade. He was working on a series of paintings for the Capuchins of Cadiz when he died in 1682. More research needs to be done around Girl Leaning on a Ledge, particularly to establish whether or not it was painted by Murillo himself
