EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a snapshot of Samuel John Govier's early days as a pioneering photographer in Cornwall during the late 19th and early 20th century. The image showcases Govier's photographic van parked by an enchanting, unidentified cottage nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of West Cornwall. In those early years, before establishing his studios in Chacewater and St Agnes, Govier would travel on his bicycle or rely on a horse-drawn van to reach various locations for his photography endeavors. This particular scene showcases his father, Samuel Govier, standing proudly at the doorway of the van alongside their loyal canine companion. Facing towards the charming cottage is Annie, Govier's mother, while Bessie (later known as Mrs Bessie Olver), believed to be his sister, stands gracefully next to a horse-drawn trap on the right side of the frame. The photograph offers us a glimpse into not only Samuel John Govier's personal life but also provides insight into transportation methods used during that era. It evokes nostalgia for Victorian and Edwardian times when caravans were essential tools for photographers like him who sought to capture moments frozen in time. Preserved within the precious pages of the Govier family album at Royal Cornwall Museum, this remarkable piece serves as a testament to both historical significance and artistic prowess. It encapsulates an era where photography was still finding its footing while showcasing one man's determination to document Cornwall through his lens.
