EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the early 1900s takes us back in time to Fore Street, Grampound, Cornwall. The image captures a picturesque view up the hill, showcasing the charm and simplicity of this quaint Cornish village. In the foreground stands a young girl with an air of innocence, carrying a buzza - a traditional toy that brings joy to children's hearts. As our gaze travels further up the hill, we notice a stationary pony and trap patiently waiting for its next adventure. Beside it stands another young girl, her determination evident as she focuses on retrieving a stray sheep from the road. A loyal sheepdog dutifully guards this woolly wanderer, adding an element of rural authenticity to this scene frozen in time. The photographer behind this remarkable snapshot is Samuel John Govier, whose keen eye for detail has immortalized these everyday moments forever. Through his lens, he effortlessly transports us to an era where life moved at a slower pace and simple pleasures were cherished. This print serves as more than just a visual delight; it encapsulates history and nostalgia within its frame. It invites us to reflect upon bygone days when children played with handmade toys and animals roamed freely through village streets. Preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum's archives, this cornish postcard allows us to appreciate not only Govier's talent but also provides insight into the lives of those who once called Fore Street their home.
