Polruan, Lanteglos by Fowey, Cornwall. Around 1912
A view of Polruan from Fowey, showing the village on the hillside with the Fowey Estuary in the foreground. Yachts and small sailing boats can be seen on the river. Clearly visible is the blockhouse fortification, built in the 14th century, that guards the entrance to the River Fowey. The blockhouse is one of a pair, its partner being situated on the Fowey side of the river. A defensive chain was strung between the two blockhouses to prevent enemy ships entering the harbour, with the chain being lowered for friendly vessels. This was primarily used during the wars with the Dutch. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the picturesque village of Polruan, nestled on the hillside overlooking the Fowey Estuary in Cornwall. The year is 1912, and as we gaze upon this stunning view, we are transported to an era where yachts and small sailing boats gracefully navigate the tranquil waters of the river. In this snapshot of history, our eyes are drawn to a remarkable sight - a formidable blockhouse fortification standing proudly at the entrance of the River Fowey. Dating back to the 14th century, this ancient structure was one half of a defensive pair that guarded against enemy ships attempting to enter the harbour. A chain would be strung between these two blockhouses during times of conflict with Dutch forces, effectively securing Polruan's safety while allowing friendly vessels safe passage through its lowered defenses. The photographer behind this mesmerizing image is Arthur William Jordan. Through his lens, he captures not only a glimpse into everyday life in a Cornish fishing village but also immortalizes an important piece of local history. As we admire this photograph print from Royal Cornwall Museum, let us appreciate both its artistic beauty and historical significance. It serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich maritime heritage and reminds us how landscapes can hold stories within their very fabric.
