Gumbo Flyers, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. July 1991

A new group in Lostwithiel playing the Cajun and Zydeco music of Louisiana, USA, had their first outing at the Globe Inn, Lostwithiel, on carnival night, to foot-thumping acclaim. The group was founded by Pete Turner who returned from the southern states of America where he had spent the previous 6 weeks soaking up the atmosphere. The group were still playing, albeit with a different line up, in pubs and at events throughout Cornwall in 2018. Members, from left to right, are Richard Marks, Tony Taylor, Alan Rogers, Pete Turner and Oscar Morse. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the musical history of Lostwithiel, Cornwall. In July 1991, a new group called Gumbo Flyers emerged on the local music scene, bringing the vibrant sounds of Cajun and Zydeco from Louisiana, USA to this quaint Cornish town. The Globe Inn became witness to their debut performance on carnival night, where foot-thumping acclaim echoed through its walls. Pete Turner, who had recently returned from an immersive six-week trip to America's southern states, founded the group. Inspired by his experiences there, he assembled a talented lineup consisting of Richard Marks, Tony Taylor, Alan Rogers, Pete Turner himself and Oscar Morse - all passionate musicians dedicated to recreating the infectious rhythms of Louisiana. Over time, Gumbo Flyers evolved with different members but continued their musical journey throughout Cornwall until 2018. Their lively performances could still be enjoyed in various pubs and events across the county. In this photograph captured by Jonathan Barker at that memorable first outing in Lostwithiel's Globe Inn back in 1991; we see these talented individuals engrossed in their craft. An accordion takes center stage while work benches serve as makeshift stages for other instruments like guitars. This image encapsulates not just a moment frozen in time but also reflects the spirit of camaraderie among these Cornish musicians as they bring joyous melodies to life for audiences near and far.
