The Egyptian House, Chapel Street, Penzance, Cornwall. 1974

A view of the Egyptian House in Chapel Street. The Egyptian House was created between 1834 and 1837 by bookseller John Lavin who sold maps, guides and stationery. However, his main business was minerals which he bought, sold and exhibited in a museum which was also housed in the building. The Egyptian House was purchased by the Landmark Trust in 1968. The charity specialises in the restoration of buildings of architectural and historic importance and is now let out as 3 separate apartments. To the left is J.A. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Egyptian House in Chapel Street, Penzance, Cornwall. Taken in 1974 by photographer Charles Woolf, it offers a glimpse into the rich history of this unique building. Constructed between 1834 and 1837 by bookseller John Lavin, the Egyptian House originally served as a hub for his various businesses. While he primarily sold maps, guides, and stationery, Lavin's true passion lay in minerals. He not only bought and sold them but also exhibited them in a museum housed within the same building. Fast forward to 1968 when the Egyptian House was acquired by the Landmark Trust - a charity dedicated to restoring architecturally significant structures with historical importance. Today, this remarkable landmark has been transformed into three separate apartments that are available for rent. In this snapshot of time captured by Woolf's lens, we see J. A. Treglown & Sons on the left side of the frame - an establishment known for their expertise in auctions, valuations, and real estate services. On the right side stands Peter Dalwood's bookstore. The image beautifully encapsulates both architectural splendor and historical significance while providing us with a window into Penzance's past. It serves as a testament to preservation efforts undertaken by organizations like The Landmark Trust who ensure that these treasures continue to be cherished for generations to come.
