Framed Photos from Royal Cornwall Museum

George Criscuolo fitting an evening gown of Crysede silk, St Ives, Cornwall. Around 1927

The gown is printed with the Pastoral design, fabric printed with the Zennor design is draped on the chair to the left and the fabric on the wall to the right bears the Isles of Scilly design. The model was Phyllis Hicks, later manageress of the St Ives shop and married to Tom Firth, one time chief dyer. Alec Walker left Mirfield, Yorkshire, in 1918 to set up a small experimental textile factory in Newlyn where wood-block printed silk fabrics and garments were designed and manufactured. By 1925 the Crysede venture had become a successful craft industry, employing many local people, which required larger premises. In 1926 the works moved to the Island Works housed in the former Western Pilchard cellar at the base of The Island in St Ives. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print captures a moment in time, showcasing the skilled craftsmanship of George Criscuolo as he meticulously fits an exquisite evening gown made from Crysede silk. The year is around 1927, and the location is St Ives, Cornwall. Intricately designed with the Pastoral pattern, the gown exudes elegance and sophistication. To the left of George Criscuolo stands a chair adorned with fabric printed with the Zennor design, adding a touch of artistic flair to the scene. On the wall to his right hangs another piece of fabric featuring the Isles of Scilly design, showcasing the diverse range of prints produced by this innovative textile factory. Phyllis Hicks graces this photograph as she models this stunning creation. Little did anyone know at that time that Phyllis would later become manageress of the St Ives shop and marry Tom Firth, who was once chief dyer for Crysede. Alec Walker's journey from Mirfield to Newlyn in 1918 marked a turning point for him as he established an experimental textile factory. By 1925, his venture had flourished into a successful craft industry employing numerous locals. This growth necessitated larger premises, leading to their relocation to Island Works on The Island in St Ives in 1926. This remarkable image serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich history in textiles and dressmaking while capturing an era when Crysede became synonymous with quality and art
