The Prince and Princess of Wales, later to become King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, were in the first skip to descend the inclined Boscawen Shaft. Pictured here are the Duke of St Albans, the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe, Captain de Grey and Edward St Aubyn. The despatching party are wearing top hats and Captain John Rowe is standing to the rear of skip, helmet in hand and ready to take his seat as brakesman.
