African buffaloes

African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer). Bull (male) African buffalo checking the oestrus state of a cow (female). Cows, which become sexually mature at 5 years of age, are in oestrus (heat) for between 1 to 6 days of their 23 day oestrus cycle. They are able to mate all year round, although the peak of the mating season is timed so calves are born at the beginning of the wet season. Cows give birth to a single calf after a gestation period of just over 11 months. African buffaloes are found on the savannahs and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. They feed on grasses and other vegetation. Both sexes have low, curved horns. Photographed in Vaalbos, South Africa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable moment in the African buffalo's reproductive cycle. In the vast savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa, a majestic bull African buffalo is seen attentively checking the oestrus state of a female cow. These incredible animals reach sexual maturity at 5 years old and experience heat for 1 to 6 days during their 23-day oestrus cycle. With the ability to mate throughout the year, their peak mating season aligns with the beginning of the wet season, ensuring calves are born into favorable conditions. The photograph was taken in Vaalbos, South Africa, showcasing these magnificent creatures within their natural habitat. The African buffaloes graze on grasses and other vegetation found in woodlands and savannahs. Both males and females possess distinctive curved horns that add to their commanding presence. With its intricate details captured by Science Photo Library, this image provides an insight into the social dynamics and biological processes of these herbivorous mammals. The male buffalo's keen sense of smell allows him to determine if a female is receptive for reproduction, contributing to successful mating within their herd. Overall, this breathtaking print serves as a testament to both nature's beauty and scientific exploration while highlighting the fascinating world of African buffaloes in all its glory.
