Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932), Brazilian aviation pioneer, sitting in Demoiselle, his famed light aircraft. The son of a rich plantation owner, Santos-Dumont became interested in flight while studying engineering in Paris, France. After piloting balloons, he built his first powered airship in 1898. His airship flight exploits caught the public imagination. In October 1901, Santos-Dumont received a prize for being the first person to fly around the Eiffel Tower. He built an aeroplane in 1906, the 14 bis and made the first sustained free flight in Europe on 23 October 1906 in Bagatelle Park, Paris, France

This print captures the remarkable Alberto Santos-Dumont, a true Brazilian aviation pioneer. Born in 1873 to a wealthy plantation owner, Santos-Dumont's fascination with flight began during his engineering studies in Paris. His journey into the skies started with piloting balloons, but it was his creation of the first powered airship in 1898 that truly captured public imagination. In October 1901, Santos-Dumont achieved an incredible feat by becoming the first person to fly around the iconic Eiffel Tower, earning him a prestigious prize. Undeterred by this accomplishment, he went on to construct his own aeroplane named "14 bis" in 1906. It was with this aircraft that he made history once again on October 23rd of the same year when he completed Europe's first sustained free flight at Bagatelle Park in Paris.
