Bee eye, SEM

Bee eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the compound eye of a honey bee (Apis mellifera). Protective hairs cover its surface. The eye consists of many visual units, known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium consists of an outer cuticle covering a lens, beneath which is a group of light-sensitive cells known as the retinula. Nerve fibres from the retinula converge onto the optic nerve, relaying visual signals to the brain. The image seen by insects with compound eyes is thought to be a mosaic image, poorly focused but good at detecting movements. Magnification: x180 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate beauty of a honey bee's compound eye. The scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the mesmerizing details of this remarkable sensory organ, showcasing its complex structure and protective features. The surface of the bee's eye is adorned with delicate hairs that serve as a shield against potential harm. Composed of numerous ommatidia, each functioning as an individual visual unit, this compound eye enables the honey bee to perceive its surroundings in a unique way. Within each ommatidium lies an outer cuticle covering a lens, beneath which resides a group of light-sensitive cells called retinula. These cells transmit visual signals through nerve fibers that converge onto the optic nerve, ultimately relaying information to the brain. Although their vision may be characterized by mosaic images and poor focus, bees excel at detecting movements due to their compound eyes' exceptional sensitivity. This image serves as a reminder of nature's ingenuity and showcases how these tiny creatures navigate their environment with precision. With its vibrant colors and meticulous detail, this print not only celebrates the wonders of zoology but also highlights the importance of protecting our precious wildlife. It offers us a glimpse into another world—one where even something as small as an insect can possess such extraordinary sight and sensory capabilities.
