COBE satellite

Artists impression of COBE, NASAs Cosmic Background Explorer satellite. Launched on 18 November 1989, COBE is a fundamental astronomy mission to investigate the cosmic background radiation & answer questions about the nature of the Universe as a whole. It is equipped with infrared & microwave sensors which will map the whole sky at 100 different wavelengths. In 1990, COBE returned the first spectrum of the cosmic background radiation - the " heat signal" of the Big Bang - & showed it to be a perfect " black body" curve, so confirming the theory of the Big Bang. The picture represents COBE against the glow of the cosmic background radiation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the COBE satellite, an iconic symbol of NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer mission. Launched on November 18,1989, this fundamental astronomy endeavor aimed to unravel the mysteries surrounding cosmic background radiation and shed light on the nature of our vast Universe. Equipped with state-of-the-art infrared and microwave sensors, COBE embarked on a groundbreaking journey to map the entire sky using 100 different wavelengths. In 1990, COBE achieved a monumental feat by providing humanity with its first-ever spectrum of cosmic background radiation – often referred to as the "heat signal" of the Big Bang. This extraordinary image revealed a flawless "black body" curve, confirming one of science's most profound theories: The Big Bang theory. The artwork depicts COBE gracefully floating amidst the ethereal glow emanating from cosmic background radiation. Its sleek design represents mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge in astrophysics and space exploration. As it traverses through uncharted territories, this remarkable spacecraft continues to unveil secrets hidden within our universe.
