Coloured engraving of an Iguanodon museum exhibit

Iguanodon. Coloured engraving from 1883 of people viewing an Iguanodon dinosaur skeleton in a museum. Iguanodon was a herbivorous dinosaur that lived in the early Cretaceous period (130-110 million years ago). Large groupings of fossils suggest that it lived in herds. The upright Iguanodon posture seen here was first proposed by Louis De Pauw and Louis Dollo in 1882 after the discovery of complete skeletons at Bernissart mine, Belgium. Previous reconstructions based on incomplete fossils had shown Iguanodon walking on 4 legs with a spike on its nose rather than on its thumbs. In 1997 it is thought that Iguanodons tail is less curved & its backbone more horizontal than seen here

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving from 1883 captures a fascinating moment in the history of paleontology. The image showcases a group of people gathered around an awe-inspiring museum exhibit - the skeleton of an Iguanodon dinosaur. Iguanodon, a herbivorous dinosaur that roamed the Earth during the early Cretaceous period, lived approximately 130-110 million years ago. This particular species is believed to have moved in herds, as indicated by large groupings of fossils found. The posture depicted in this engraving was first proposed by Louis De Pauw and Louis Dollo in 1882 after complete skeletons were discovered at Bernissart mine in Belgium. Prior to this discovery, reconstructions based on incomplete fossils portrayed Iguanodon walking on all fours with a spike on its nose instead of its thumbs. It's interesting to note that modern research suggests some differences from what is seen here. In 1997, it was suggested that Iguanodons had less curved tails and more horizontal backbones than previously thought. This artwork not only provides us with a glimpse into the world of dinosaurs but also highlights how our understanding and interpretation of these ancient creatures has evolved over time. It serves as a testament to the ever-evolving field of paleontology and reminds us just how much there is still left to discover about our planet's prehistoric past.
