Framed Print of Crashed German Zeppelin, 1918
Crashed German Zeppelin. Aerial view of the wrecked shell of a Zeppelin in an English field. The date is thought to be 8 August 1918, towards the end of the First World War. Zeppelins, a German design of airship that flew commercially from 1910, were used mainly for reconnaissance during the First World War, but also for bombing raids. The number of raids decreased as the war came to an end and air defences improved. The final raid took place on 5 August 1918, when the L70 Zeppelin was shot down just north of Wells-next-the-Sea on the Norfolk coast. There were no survivors. This photograph is from the Detroit Publishing Company. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
