Framed Print of Franz Joseph Gall, German physiologist

Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828), German physiologist. Gall believed that the brains shape was related to mental capacity and that different parts of the brain controlled specific parts of the human body. Gall also believed that this shape could be deduced by measuring the shape and bumps of the skull. From this he developed a new science, called phrenology, which was later discredited. Gall was banned from lecturing in Vienna, Austria, because his materialistic philosophy was considered subversive of religion. Lithograph from Galerie medicale (1825-1829), a collection of portraits by Pierre Roch Vigneron (1789-1872). Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
