Gustavus Swift, US industrialist C016 / 8870

Gustavus Franklin Swift (1839-1903), US industrialist and pioneer of the meat-packing industry. Swift worked in the livestock and animal slaughtering business from the age of 14. After earlier ventures, he established Swift and Company in Chicago in 1885. Using new refrigeration technology, rail and production line methods, he revolutionized the industry and made his fortune. This 1901 photograph is courtesy of Swift and Company. It was published in The Epic of Industry (1926), volume 5 of The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States. This was a 15-volume series that commemorated 150 years since the founding of the USA in 1776

Frames have a perspex front providing a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish which is easily cleaned with a damp cloth.
