Inhalation Apparatus
This version of a 19th century anaesthetic inhaler consists of a two-part vessel A and B containing a sponge soaked in sulfuric ether or chloroform, connected to a flexible tube D ending in a mouthpiece E. The inner part B contains a series of perforations and as it is screwed in or out it varies the amount of air drawn in over the sponges as the patient breathed in and thus the concentration of the air-ether mixture. Above the container is a valve C, containing a ball of cork, and which closes on inspiration and opens with expiration

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an intriguing 19th-century invention known as the Inhalation Apparatus. Designed to administer anaesthesia, this apparatus consists of two parts - vessel A and B - housing a sponge soaked in either sulfuric ether or chloroform. Connected to a flexible tube ending in a mouthpiece, it allowed patients to inhale the air-ether mixture for pain relief during medical procedures. The inner part B features perforations that can be adjusted by screwing it in or out, regulating the amount of air drawn over the sponges as patients breathed in. This mechanism ensured precise control over the concentration of the air-ether mixture, enhancing its effectiveness. Above the container lies valve C, containing a ball of cork. This valve cleverly closes during inspiration and opens with expiration, facilitating smooth inhalation and exhalation processes for patients using this apparatus. Capturing both innovation and history within one frame, Sheila Terry's photograph transports us back to an era where painless medical procedures were made possible through ingenious inventions like this anaesthetic inhaler. The image invites contemplation on how far we have come in terms of medical advancements while acknowledging our debt to these early pioneers who paved the way for modern anesthesia techniques.
