Jacques Charles, French balloonist

Jacques Alexandre Cesar Charles (1746-1823), French chemist, physicist and aeronaut, historical artwork. A scientist and professor of physics, Charles developed several inventions including the hydrometer and reflecting goniometer, and improved the Gravesand heliostat and Fahrenheits aerometer. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences and is perhaps best remembered for his formulation in 1787 of Charless law, one of the basic gas laws. However, during his lifetime, Charles was probably better known for making the first-ever flight in a hydrogen balloon on 1st December 1783, together with Marie-Noel Robert

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jacques Charles, a renowned French balloonist and scientist from the 18th century. Known for his contributions to physics and chemistry, Charles developed various inventions that revolutionized scientific understanding at the time. His accomplishments include creating the hydrometer, reflecting goniometer, Gravesand heliostat, and Fahrenheits aerometer. Elected to the prestigious French Academy of Sciences, Charles is most famously remembered for formulating Charless law in 1787—a fundamental principle in gas laws. However, it was his groundbreaking achievement on December 1st, 1783 that brought him widespread recognition: he made history by becoming the first person to successfully fly in a hydrogen-filled balloon alongside Marie-Noel Robert. This historical artwork beautifully captures Charles' pioneering spirit as an aviation pioneer. The illustration depicts a European man with white hair and a determined expression inside a hot air balloon filled with hydrogen—an innovation that would shape the future of flight.
