Mammoth ivory sculptures
Mammoth ivory sculptures. Female figures carved from tusks of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). The woolly mammoth was a large, elephant-like mammal with a thick, hairy coat. The tusks of the male woolly mammoth reached 3 metres in length. It lived on the steppes of Siberia and in much of Europe up until about 10, 000 years ago. Woolly mammoths died out as Eurasia warmed up at the end of the last ice age and forests spread across the steppes. These figures, which date from the Palaeolithic period (500, 000-10, 000BC), were found during an archaeological excavation in the village of Kostenki in the Rostov region of Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Mammoth ivory sculptures. Carved from the tusks of the majestic woolly mammoth, these female figures provide a glimpse into the rich history and artistry of our ancient ancestors. The woolly mammoth, an elephant-like mammal with a thick, hairy coat, roamed the steppes of Siberia and much of Europe until approximately 10,000 years ago. The male woolly mammoths possessed tusks that could reach an astonishing length of 3 meters. However, it is these delicate carvings depicting pregnant female figures that have stood the test of time. Dating back to the Palaeolithic period (500,000-10,000 BC), they were discovered during an archaeological excavation in Kostenki village within Russia's Rostov region. As Eurasia warmed up at the end of the last ice age and forests expanded across the steppes, these magnificent creatures sadly became extinct. Yet their legacy lives on through remarkable artifacts like these sculptures. Each piece represents not only skilled craftsmanship but also serves as a symbol of fertility and feminine power. In this monochrome image captured by Science Photo Library, we are transported back in time to appreciate both human creativity and nature's wonders. These statues offer valuable insights into our prehistoric past while reminding us to cherish and protect Earth's diverse heritage for future generations to come.
