MDF and chipboard C016 / 4468

MDF and chipboard. Stack of MDF (medium density fibreboard) and chipboard wood. MDF is made from broken down wood fibres that are reformed into panels along with resins that bind the fibres together. Chipboard is made from wood chips and sawmill shavings that are bound together by synthetic resin. Both materials are used as a cheaper and in some cases stronger alternative to natural wood. Both products slowly release urea-formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, into the air. Wood dust released when cutting these products is also known to be a respiratory irritant

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Cordelia Molloy from the Science Photo Library showcases a stack of MDF (medium density fibreboard) and chipboard wood, two commonly used construction materials. MDF is created by breaking down wood fibres and reforming them into panels with the help of resins that bind the fibres together. On the other hand, chipboard is made from wood chips and sawmill shavings that are bound together using synthetic resin. While these materials serve as cost-effective alternatives to natural wood, it's important to be aware of their potential dangers. Both MDF and chipboard slowly release urea-formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, into the air over time. Additionally, when cutting these products, wood dust is released which can act as a respiratory irritant. Despite their hazardous properties, MDF and chipboard continue to be widely used in various construction projects due to their affordability and strength. However, precautions should always be taken when working with or being exposed to these materials. This thought-provoking image prompts us to consider not only the benefits but also the risks associated with our building choices. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly innocuous substances can have hidden dangers lurking within them.
