Optical image of the Rosette nebula NGC 2237-2239

Rosette nebula. True-colour optical image of the Rosette nebula (NGC 2237-2239). This nebula is about 2600 light years away, and lies in the constellation Monoceros. It is a cloud of dust and hydrogen gas around 100 light years across. The gas is ionised and lit up by the open cluster of young, hot stars at its centre (NGC 2244). Silhouetted against the nebula are dark filaments composed of interstellar dust, which appear to be condensing into round blobs known as Bok globules. These are believed to be regions where star formation takes place. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the Palomar Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Rosette nebula, also known as NGC 2237-2239. Located approximately 2600 light years away in the constellation Monoceros, this celestial wonder spans an impressive distance of about 100 light years. Composed of dust and hydrogen gas, it is illuminated by a cluster of young and scorching stars at its core, identified as NGC 2244. Against the backdrop of this ethereal nebula, we can observe dark filaments formed by interstellar dust. These intricate structures appear to be condensing into spherical shapes called Bok globules, which are believed to be hotspots for star formation within the cosmic expanse. The image itself is a true-colour optical representation created through digital merging of photographs taken with both blue and red light filters using the Palomar Schmidt Telescope. Its vibrant hues bring forth a sense of awe-inspiring grandeur that reminds us of our place in the vastness of space. As we gaze upon this remarkable snapshot captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of our fascination with astronomy but also our ongoing quest to understand the mysteries surrounding stellar birth and evolution. This photograph serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit in unraveling the secrets hidden within these distant realms beyond Earth's atmosphere.
