CMS detector

CMS detector being built. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) is a detector at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. The central hole (above mans head) will surround part of the LHC, a 27-kilometre-long underground ring. Proton beams will be accelerated by the LHC to collide head-on. The collision energy will create new particles that will decay into other particles. These will be detected by the many detector layers that will fill the central space. Here, there are the layers (red) of the muon detector. A muon is a heavy version of an electron. The LHC is scheduled to start operating in 2007

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the construction of the CMS detector, a vital component of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. The image captures an awe-inspiring moment as technicians assemble and construct this groundbreaking technological marvel. The central hole in the photo will eventually enclose part of the 27-kilometre-long underground ring that houses the LHC. Inside this colossal structure, proton beams are accelerated to collide head-on with tremendous force. These collisions generate an immense amount of energy, leading to the creation of new particles that subsequently decay into other particles. To capture these elusive particles and unravel their mysteries, numerous layers of detectors fill the central space within CMS. In this particular snapshot, we can observe vivid red layers representing muon detectors. Muons are heavier versions of electrons and play a crucial role in particle physics research. Scheduled for operation in 2007 when this photograph was taken by Science Photo Library, the LHC represents humanity's relentless pursuit to understand fundamental aspects of our universe through cutting-edge technology and scientific exploration. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration on a global scale as scientists from various backgrounds come together at CERN's European particle physics laboratory to push boundaries and expand our knowledge about subatomic particles like never before.
