Tracing from an Egyptian tomb of a man suffering from Potts disease, or tuberculosis of the spine. The deformity is due to a bacterial infection in childhood which affects the front of the spinal vertebrae causing them to collapse forward, curving the spine. The bacillus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis enters by the mouth, usually through infected cows milk. The disease was named after a fashionable 18th century London surgeon Dr Percival Pott
