Ross Arctic search expedition, 1848-9 C016 / 4490

Ross Arctic search expedition. 19th-century artwork of the ships HMS Enterprise and HMS Investigator caught in pack ice in Baffin Bay off Devils Point in the Arctic. These ships were part of an 1848 expedition led by British naval officer and explorer Sir James Clark Ross (1800-1862) to find the lost 1845 expedition led by Sir John Franklin. The crew are working to free the ships from the ice. The expedition returned to England in 1849, defeated by the heavy ice conditions. This artwork is by Charles Haghe, after an original by Lieutenant William Henry Browne who served on HMS Enterprise and published an account and set of artworks of the voyage in 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the treacherous conditions faced by the Ross Arctic search expedition of 1848-9. In this 19th-century artwork, we see the ships HMS Enterprise and HMS Investigator trapped in pack ice in Baffin Bay off Devils Point in the Arctic. Led by British naval officer and explorer Sir James Clark Ross, this expedition aimed to find the lost 1845 expedition led by Sir John Franklin. The scene depicts a desperate struggle as the crew members tirelessly work to free their ships from the icy grip that surrounds them. The harsh winter conditions are evident, with snow-covered landscapes and frozen waters stretching as far as the eye can see. This illustration, created by Charles Haghe based on Lieutenant William Henry Browne's original artwork, showcases both the bravery and determination of these explorers. Sadly, despite their valiant efforts, this particular mission was ultimately defeated by heavy ice conditions. The crew returned to England in 1849 without achieving their goal of locating Franklin's lost expedition. This historical lithograph offers a glimpse into a challenging chapter of maritime exploration during the 1800s. It serves as a reminder of both human resilience and vulnerability when facing nature's unforgiving forces in one of Earth's most inhospitable regions - an enduring testament to those who dared to venture into uncharted territories for discovery and knowledge.
