SEM of diamond stylus in groove of LP record H100 / 0104

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a long-playing record (L.P.), showing a spherical diamond stylus (suspended below its cantilever arm) sitting in a groove. The L.P. is made by pressing the recording information onto a softened (heated) PVC disc. The stylus sits nicely in the V-shaped groove, and lateral vibrations are picked up by the stylus and transduced by a moving-coil or moving-magnet cartridge into an electrical signal, which passes through an amplifier to be heard on loudspeakers. Magnification: X 13 at 35mm size, X 90 at 8x10- inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the world of analog music. The scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the intricate details of a long-playing record (L. P. ), showcasing a spherical diamond stylus delicately positioned in one of its grooves. Crafted by pressing recording information onto a heated PVC disc, this familiar object holds countless memories and melodies within its circular embrace. The stylus, suspended beneath its cantilever arm, elegantly rests within the V-shaped groove, ready to embark on an auditory journey. As the L. P. spins, lateral vibrations are effortlessly captured by the stylus and transformed into an electrical signal through either a moving-coil or moving-magnet cartridge. This signal then traverses through an amplifier before finding its voice through loudspeakers. With magnification revealing astonishing detail at 13 times normal size for 35mm prints and an astounding 90 times for larger 8x10-inch prints, this SEM image showcases both the beauty and complexity hidden within seemingly ordinary objects. It serves as a testament to the remarkable technology that has allowed us to enjoy music in such tangible form for decades. Dr. Tony Brain's expertise behind this photograph ensures that every nuance is preserved with utmost precision, inviting us to appreciate not only the artistry of vinyl records but also their enduring place in our collective cultural heritage.
