SEM of tarantula fangs

Tarantula fangs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tarantula spiderling (family Theraphosidae) performing a forward strike. The spiders fangs (orange) can be seen at the end of the chelicerae (centre). To the side of the chelicerae are leg-like palps and beside them are the spiders legs. When tarantulas strike forward like this, they are attempting to sink their fangs into their prey (usually small birds or insects). Venom from the fangs will kill and digest the prey. The spider will then suck the prey juices into its mouth. Taratula spiderlings can take twelve years to reach adulthood. Magnification: x11 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a tarantula spiderling's fangs in stunning clarity. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) captures the moment when this young arachnid performs a forward strike, revealing its vibrant orange fangs at the end of its chelicerae. Alongside these menacing fangs are leg-like palps and the spider's delicate legs. Tarantulas employ this striking technique to immobilize their prey, typically small birds or insects. Once their venomous fangs penetrate their victim, it spells certain doom as the potent venom swiftly kills and begins digesting the unfortunate creature. The spider then proceeds to suck out all vital juices from its prey into its mouth. It is fascinating to note that tarantula spiderlings undergo an extensive growth process before reaching adulthood, which can take up to twelve years. This image provides us with a glimpse into nature's remarkable intricacies and serves as a reminder of both the beauty and ferocity found within our wildlife. Displayed at x11 magnification on a 6x7cm size print, this photograph by Science Photo Library offers an awe-inspiring perspective on these incredible creatures while highlighting key aspects of zoology and animal behavior research.
