EDITORS COMMENTS
The title page of William Gilbert's De Magnete is a testament to the groundbreaking work of this 16th-century physicist. Published in 1628, this second edition solidified Gilbert's reputation as a pioneer in the study of magnetism. Born in 1544 and passing away in 1603, Gilbert was not only an English physician but also a brilliant mind who reshaped our understanding of the natural world. De Magnete, meaning "Concerning Magnets" presented revolutionary ideas that would shape scientific thought for centuries to come. One of his most significant contributions was proposing that the Earth itself is a large magnetic sphere. This notion challenged prevailing beliefs at the time and laid the foundation for further exploration into magnetism. Gilbert's work also shed light on compasses, revealing that they do not point towards celestial bodies but instead align with Earth's magnetic poles. His discoveries paved the way for future advancements in navigation and greatly impacted various fields such as astronomy and geology. Renowned figures like Joseph Priestly hailed him as "the father of modern electricity" while Galileo considered him to be instrumental in establishing experimentalism as a fundamental approach to scientific inquiry. This print from Science Photo Library serves as a visual tribute to William Gilbert's enduring legacy. It reminds us of his profound impact on our understanding of magnetism and his crucial role in shaping modern physics.
