Tuning fork for neutrino detector

Experimental neutrino detector. Researcher holds a tuning fork used in an experimental neutrino detector originally built by Joseph Weber in the 1980s. The tuning fork vibrates in response to neutrinos from the Sun that have been scattered by a sapphire crystal. Weber believed that pure samples of very stiff crystals, such as sapphire, could be used to detect neutrinos. Since neutrinos have extremely high frequencies, and are able to travel through the Earth, he proposed a new form of long distance telecommunication. Neutrino particles lack electric charge and have almost no mass. Photographed at the Pirelli Research Centre, Milan, Italy

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a researcher holding a tuning fork that plays an integral role in an experimental neutrino detector. Originally constructed by the brilliant Joseph Weber during the 1980s, this groundbreaking device aimed to detect elusive neutrinos from our Sun. The tuning fork, made of sapphire crystal, vibrates in response to these enigmatic particles after they have been scattered. Weber's visionary concept was based on the belief that stiff crystals like sapphire could serve as effective detectors for neutrinos due to their ability to withstand high frequencies. Fascinatingly, these minuscule particles possess no electric charge and almost negligible mass while possessing the extraordinary capability to traverse through our planet Earth. Photographed at Milan's esteemed Pirelli Research Centre in Italy, this image showcases Luca—a dedicated scientist—engaged in testing this remarkable equipment. As a Caucasian adult working within the realm of particle physics, Luca represents countless individuals who tirelessly strive towards unraveling the mysteries of our universe. This photograph not only captures a pivotal moment in scientific exploration but also alludes to Weber's audacious proposal for long-distance telecommunication using neutrinos—an idea that continues to inspire researchers today. With its fusion of human ingenuity and cutting-edge technology, this image serves as a testament to humanity's ceaseless pursuit of knowledge and understanding within the realms of physics and beyond.
