Valentina Tereshkova, Soviet cosmonaut

Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova (born 1937), Soviet cosmonaut and first woman in space. Tereshkova flew solo in the Vostok 6 spacecraft on 16 June 1963. She spent almost three days in orbit, circling the Earth 48 times. Tereshkova was one of several female parachutists selected for this mission. They were trained separately from the male cosmonauts, and it was 19 years before another woman went into space. After her flight, Tereshkova trained as an engineer, and later became a politician. Her flight made her famous in the USSR and around the world. Her honours include Hero of the Soviet Union (on her left lapel), the Order of Lenin, and Order of the October Revolution. Photographed in 1973

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Valentina Tereshkova, the remarkable Soviet cosmonaut who made history as the first woman in space. Born in 1937, Tereshkova embarked on her groundbreaking journey on June 16,1963, when she fearlessly flew solo aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft. Spending nearly three days orbiting Earth and completing an astonishing 48 revolutions around our planet, she left an indelible mark on human exploration. Tereshkova's selection for this mission was a result of her exceptional skills as a parachutist. She underwent separate training from male cosmonauts, highlighting her determination and resilience in breaking gender barriers. It would be almost two decades before another woman ventured into space. Following her historic flight, Tereshkova pursued further education as an engineer and later delved into politics. Her achievements earned her numerous accolades including Hero of the Soviet Union (adorned on her left lapel), the prestigious Order of Lenin, and Order of the October Revolution. Photographed in 1973 with a radiant smile that reflects both happiness and pride, Valentina Tereshkova remains an iconic symbol not only within Russia but also worldwide. This image captures a significant moment during the Space Race era of the mid-20th century when humanity pushed boundaries to conquer new frontiers beyond Earth's atmosphere. The medals adorning her uniform serve as tangible reminders of her extraordinary bravery and pioneering spirit that continue to inspire generations to reach for the stars.
