EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in London's firefighting history. In the year 1936, a massive blaze erupted at St Georgess Wharf, a rice warehouse belonging to Carbutt and Company, Ltd. , located in Shad Thames, Bermondsey. The intensity of the fire prompted an emergency call that summoned all 250 firemen from the 60 stations within the LCC. As thick plumes of smoke billowed into the sky, these brave firefighters donned gas masks to protect themselves against the dense fumes emanating from burning rice. To combat this inferno, a colossal turntable water tower was deployed as part of their operation. The sheer magnitude of this crisis even raised concerns about potential structural collapse. In this remarkable image captured by TopFoto. co. uk on April 1st, we witness cascades of water gushing out from hose pipes onto the engulfed building. This powerful visual encapsulates both the relentless efforts exerted by these courageous men and their determination to extinguish every last flame. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its historical context but also in its representation of unity and resilience amidst adversity. It serves as a testament to London's firefighting community who fearlessly risked their lives to safeguard their city during one unforgettable incident in the thirties.
