Chiven and Vichenou under the name of Sangara narainen - A Captivating Fusion of Gods

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This mesmerizing print captures an exquisite illustration from Pierre Sonnerat's renowned book, "Voyages aux Indes orientales et a la Chine". The artwork showcases the idols Shiva and Vishnu, revered deities in Hindu mythology, seamlessly merged into one divine figure known as Sangara narainen. The artist's skillful brushstrokes bring to life this extraordinary portrayal of fire and water united within a single entity. Signed by P. Sonnerat as the painter and Jean-Baptiste Marie Poisson as the sculptor, this masterpiece is a testament to their artistic prowess. As we delve into Sonnerat's exploration of Indian culture, religion, science, and art during his travels commissioned by King Louis XVI between 1774 and 1781, we are captivated by this particular depiction. It offers us a glimpse into the rich tapestry of beliefs held dear by Indians at that time. The intricate details showcased in this print invite contemplation on how different aspects of divinity can coexist harmoniously within one being. The fusion of Shiva's fiery energy with Vishnu's serene tranquility creates a visual representation that transcends traditional boundaries.
