EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century engraving transports us to the grandeur of Paris in 1797, where Luigi Cherubini's masterpiece, "Medea" was brought to life on stage. The scene depicted here is from act three of the opera, showcasing a moment of intense drama and emotion. The setting is an exquisite palace adorned with towering columns and elegant arches, evoking a sense of opulence and sophistication. Against this backdrop, we witness a performer taking center stage, fully immersed in their role as Medea. Dressed in historical clothing that reflects the period's fashion, they captivate the audience with their powerful presence. Surrounding Medea are two young boys who add depth to the scene. Their inclusion hints at the complex relationships and themes explored within Cherubini's work – love, betrayal, revenge. As daylight streams through the building exterior, it illuminates every detail of this finely crafted illustration and painting. This engraving not only captures a specific moment in history but also serves as a testament to the enduring power of art and performance. It reminds us that even centuries later, we can still be moved by these timeless stories brought to life on stage. Displayed at Civico Museo Bibliografico Musicale (Music Museum), this print invites us into an enchanting world where music intertwines with visual arts and architectural splendor. It stands as a tribute to both Cherubini's genius composition and France's rich cultural heritage during the 18th century.
