EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Marie Bard, the iconic model for the 1930 Red Cross poster and US postage stamp. Taken in New York City in 1929, Marie Bard, at the young age of 22, epitomizes grace and beauty as she poses for artist Lawrence Wilbur's illustration. Marie is a remarkable woman who leads a simple yet fulfilling life. She embodies traditional values by abstaining from smoking and late nights out. Her dedication shines through as she takes care of her parents - her mother being a pharmacist and her father an importer of coffee and tea - in their home located in Astoria, Queens. In this historical snapshot captured by Underwood Archives, we catch a glimpse into Marie's world within the confines of her kitchen. The monochromatic setting adds to its timeless appeal while emphasizing the significance of this momentous occasion. As we admire this vintage photograph with its vertical composition, it becomes evident that Marie is not just any ordinary woman; she represents strength, compassion, and resilience - qualities synonymous with the Red Cross organization itself.
