Apterygiformes, also known as the Little Spotted Kiwi or Kiwi Pukupuku, are a group of remarkable birds that can be found in the beautiful landscapes of New Zealand. These unique creatures have captured the hearts of many with their distinct features and behaviors. In the Otorohanga Breeding Facility, we can witness the captivating sight of a Great Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx hstii) in captivity. This bird stands tall, showcasing its stunning plumage and majestic presence. Moving to a nocturnal kiwi house with a reversed daylight cycle, we encounter a Brown Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli). This elusive creature roams under dim lighting conditions, perfectly adapted to its nighttime lifestyle. Meanwhile, an Okarito Brown Kiwi (Apteryx rowi) named Scooter diligently patrols his territory. With determination in his eyes, he ensures the safety of his domain within the Okarito Forest. Venturing into NW Nelson's rainforest habitat at night unveils another species - the Great Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx hstii). Here we witness this fascinating bird foraging amidst lush green foliage as it searches for sustenance under cover of darkness. Traveling further south to South Island brings us face-to-face with the Brown Kiwi (Apteryx australis), an iconic symbol of New Zealand. These birds gracefully roam their native land, leaving footprints on our hearts along their path. The North Island Brown Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) is yet another member of this extraordinary avian family. Endemic to New Zealand's North Island region, these kiwis add charm and character to their natural surroundings. Among them is also the Southern brown kiwi (Apteryx australis), representing primitive flightless birds exclusive to New Zealand. Their existence serves as a testament to the country's rich biodiversity and unique wildlife.
