The man who drank the bands champagne by H. M. Bateman

Bateman (1887-1970) was a popular artist and regularly contributed to the Sketch, the Tatler and the Bystander. His efficient, bold style depicting social faux-pas was ground breaking for its time and his work is a brilliant reflection of the period

Mrs McCorquodale (Barbara Cartland) dressed as champagne

Dame Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland (1901-2000), married name Mrs Barbara McCorquodale, British novelist. Photographed here in a sparkling champagne dress, part of a living Christmas dinner set of fancy dress at the Santa Claus Ball held at the Kit-Cat club on 18 December 1929 in aid of Queen Charlotte's Hospital National Mother-Saving Campaign. The ball featured a pageant on the theme of Queen Charlotte's Christmas Dinner where well-known Society beauties were disguised as different courses, wine, spirits and puddings! The dresses were designed by the artist Mrs Peter Baxendale and the event was organised by Barbara herself. Date: 1929
