In this photograph, the renowned British novelist, Dame Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland, also known as Mrs. Barbara McCorquodale, is seen radiating charm and elegance as she dons an extraordinary champagne costume at the Santa Claus Ball held on 18 December 1929. The event, organized by Mrs. McCorquodale herself, was a living Christmas dinner set of fancy dress in aid of Queen Charlotte's Hospital National Mother-Saving Campaign. The pageant, themed around Queen Charlotte's Christmas Dinner, featured well-known Society beauties disguised as various courses, wines, spirits, and puddings. The captivating champagne dress worn by Mrs. McCorquodale was designed by the talented artist Mrs. Peter Baxendale, adding an extra touch of glamour to the already extravagant affair. The image captures the essence of the festive spirit and the playful nature of the event, with Mrs. McCorquodale's sparkling dress reflecting the essence of the bubbly beverage it represents.
