Herbert Charles Onslow Plumer (1857-1932): A British military leader of great distinction, Plumer served in the Second Boer War and rose to prominence during the First World War as commander of the Second Army on the Flanders Front. Known for his meticulous planning and innovative tactics, Plumer's most notable victory was the Battle of Messines in 1917, which involved a massive pre-dawn artillery barrage and infantry attack. The battle is commemorated on this map of Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium. Before the war, Plumer served in Rhodesia, as seen in this portrait taken in 1902. He was also instrumental in the relief of Mafeking in 1900, as depicted in this illustration. Plumer's gallant leadership was recognized with numerous honors, including the title of Knight Commander of the Bath (GCB). After the war, he attended the unveiling of the Menin Gate in Ypres in 1927. This image shows Plumer on horseback around the turn of the century. The colonial troops in this photograph were likely under his command during his service in Rhodesia.
