Naturalism in art refers to a movement that sought to depict the world as it is, without idealization or romanticism. It emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against the prevailing academic style of painting. One notable artist associated with naturalism is Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo. His work "The Fourth Estate" exemplifies this style, depicting a group of workers united in their struggle for social justice. The painting captures the harsh realities of industrialization and highlights the plight of the working class. Another significant artwork that embodies naturalism is Guercino's "Saint Sebastian. Nature itself became an important subject for many artists practicing naturalism. Konstantin Korovin's "Birch Trees" beautifully portrays these slender trees against a backdrop of vibrant colors, capturing their delicate elegance while remaining true to reality. Similarly, Philip Wilson Steer's "The Palace, Summer Morning (Hampton Court)" depicts sunlight filtering through trees onto water bodies with meticulous attention to atmospheric effects—showcasing nature's ever-changing beauty under different lighting conditions.
