The Peninsular War, also known as the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814), was a significant conflict that witnessed several key events and influential figures. One such event was depicted in "The Forlorn Hope At Badajos" by Vereker Monteith Hamilton in 1906, showcasing the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers during the war. Admiral Horatio Nelson, renowned for his victories at sea, played a crucial role in this war. Although he did not directly participate in the Peninsular War itself, his naval prowess ensured British dominance over French forces on multiple occasions. Two prominent military leaders who shaped the outcome of this war were the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Bonaparte. Their strategic brilliance and tactical maneuvers defined many battles throughout the conflict. "The Capture of The Citadel at Badajoz" in 1939 depicts an important victory for The Connaught Rangers during their campaign against French forces. This painting showcases their triumph amidst intense fighting. Another poignant moment captured is "Funeral of General Sir John Moore after the Battle of Corunna" in 1809. This engraving immortalizes Moore's sacrifice while leading his troops against Napoleon's army. Jose Monino's funeral scene from 1808 serves as a reminder of Spain's resistance against French occupation during this period. It symbolizes their determination to regain independence from foreign rule. A notable image portrays Duke Wellington at Garonne River, highlighting his presence on various fronts during this protracted struggle for control over Iberia. The Battle of Salamanca saw remarkable valor displayed by soldiers like those from the 5th Regiment of Dragoon Guards. Their heroism contributed to decisive victories that shifted momentum towards Allied forces' favor. Francisco de Goya's etchings titled "The Disasters of War" depict harrowing scenes from this conflict.
