The spadefish, also known as the American paddlefish (Polyodon spathula), is an intriguing species that has been introduced to various regions around the world. Originally native to the Mississippi River Basin in the USA, these unique fish can now be found swimming gracefully over lake beds in a private lake located in the Moscow region of Russia. In underwater images captured by UW INDO 1852 015, we get a glimpse of their mesmerizing presence. The photographs showcase different species including Lookdowns and Atlantic spadefish, each displaying their own distinctive patterns and colors. Among them, we can also spot a Copperband butterfly fish called Chelmon rostratus. Another captivating sight is captured when a Longfin batfish (Platax teira) swims alongside Fusiliers (Caesio spp). This harmonious interaction takes place beneath a cleaning station where Circular spadefish (Platax orbicularis) gather for maintenance. Moving on to larger gatherings, one photograph reveals an impressive school of Bohar snappers (Lutjanus bohar) accompanied by a smaller shoal of Batfish. This congregation showcases the diversity and interconnectedness within marine ecosystems. Lastly, we are transported to Kimbe Bay in West New Britain, Papua New Guinea where another school of Longfin spadefish (Platax teira) glides through crystal-clear waters. Their synchronized movements create an awe-inspiring spectacle against the backdrop of vibrant coral reefs. It's fascinating how this once-native American paddlefish has made its way across continents and adapted to new environments. These captivating images serve as reminders of both nature's resilience and our responsibility to protect these delicate ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.
