EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Plee Jr. after an original illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases a vibrant and intricately detailed underwater scene featuring several exotic tropical fish species. At the center of the image, the Copperband Butterflyfish, Chelmon rostratus, can be seen with its distinctive copper-colored bands and elongated snout. Surrounding it are various other fascinating fish, including the Round Spadefish, Ephippus orbis, with its triangular body and large pectoral fins, and the Green Chromide, Etroplus suratensis, characterized by its iridescent green scales and long, pointed dorsal fin. In the background, a Chetodon, or Pearlspot, can be spotted with its distinctive black and white spots, while a Cichlid, likely the Orbe Surate or Etroplus suratensis, can be seen among the rocks. This beautiful engraving is taken from the Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published by Bernard Germain de Lacepede in Paris in 1825. The intricate details and vivid colors of this print offer a glimpse into the rich and diverse world of tropical marine life, making it a true treasure for any natural history or marine art enthusiast.
