The Spanish-American War, a turning point in American history, saw the rise of Theodore Roosevelt and his legendary Rough Riders. In 1898, amidst tensions between Spain and the United States, tragedy struck when the U. S. Battleship Maine was destroyed in Havana Harbor. This incident fueled public outrage and propelled America into war. Colonel Theodore Roosevelt led his Rough Riders to victory on San Juan Hill in Cuba. Their advances were marked on contemporary maps as they fought alongside other American forces at El Caney. The bravery displayed by these soldiers became synonymous with American heroism. The aftermath of battle brought scenes of both triumph and compassion. The battleship Iowa received prisoners from the defeated Spanish fleet while naval battles raged off Puerto Rico's coast. Meanwhile, the USS Maine made its fateful entry into Havana harbor before its tragic demise. Not limited to land engagements alone, the Battle of Manila Bay showcased America's naval might against Spain's Pacific fleet. This conflict also highlighted diversity within America's military ranks; members of the U. S Tenth (Black) Cavalry fought valiantly alongside their comrades on San Juan Hill. Through photographs captured during this era, we catch glimpses of life during wartime - soldiers huddled together in trenches or Cuban headquarters bustling with activity at Daiquiri. The Spanish-American War forever altered global power dynamics and set America on a path towards becoming a major player on the world stage, and is an event that continues to shape our understanding of history and serves as a reminder of those who sacrificed for their country's ideals.
